3 Match Test Series SL 0-3 ENG

1st Test

Day 1

England 321-8: Foakes 87, Curran 48; Perera 4-70
Sri Lanka: Yet to bat

Debutant Ben Foakes' impressive 87 not out led England's recovery after another batting collapse on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

The tourists lost five wickets before lunch as poor shot selection saw them slip to the perilous position of 103-5 after winning the toss in Galle.

But wicketkeeper Foakes' 184-ball knock took England to 321-8 at the close.

Sam Curran scored 48 in a partnership of 88 with 25-year-old Foakes, who also put on 61 with Jos Buttler.

Foakes was one of two England debutants in the team - along with opener Rory Burns, who took Alastair Cook's place at the top of the order - while bowler Stuart Broad was left out.

Burns was out for nine in the third over and when four more wickets fell in the morning session it looked as though England could be bowled out for a small total.

But Foakes, Buttler and Curran showed greater patience than the top order and guided their team to a much-improved position, which gives England a platform in the match on a spinning wicket.

Day 2

England 342 (Foakes 107) & 38-0: Jennings 26*
Sri Lanka 203: Mathews 52; Moeen 4-66, Rashid 2-30, Leach 2-41
England lead by 177 runs

England bowled out Sri Lanka on day two of the first Test to move into a dominant position in Galle.

Debutant Ben Foakes reached his first Test century before falling for 107 as England added 21 to their overnight total to post 342.

The tourists then produced a fine all-round bowling performance, with Moeen Ali taking 4-66, to bowl the hosts out for 203 in 68 overs.

England reached 38-0 at the close, 177 runs ahead.

Jack Leach and Adil Rashid took two wickets each for England, with seamers James Anderson and Sam Curran getting one apiece.

Sri Lanka were 64-4 at lunch before a patient partnership of 75 between Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews, which was ended when Rashid dismissed Chandimal for 33 shortly before tea.

Moeen then had Mathews caught at short leg from the first ball after tea and the final five wickets fell in 18.3 overs in the evening session.

England are now in a strong position to secure their first overseas Test victory since October 2016 and end a 13-game winless run away from home.

Day 3

England 342 & 322-6 dec: Jennings 146*, Stokes 62, Foakes 37
Sri Lanka 203 & 15-0: Kushal 8
Sri Lanka need 447 runs to win

Keaton Jennings ended his two-year wait for a Test century as England moved into a formidable position on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Jennings scored a brilliant 146 not out to allow England to declare late in the day on 322-6.

Sri Lanka closed on 15-0 and must bat the final two days for a draw or score a record 462 to win to deny England a first away win in 13 Tests.

Jennings's century was his first since his ton on debut in 2016.

Day 4

England 342 & 322-6 dec: Jennings 146*, Stokes 62
Sri Lanka 203 & 250: Mathews 53; Moeen 4-71, Leach 3-60
England win by 211 runs

England completed a thumping 211-run victory on day four of the first Test against Sri Lanka to end their 13-match winless run away from home.

The tourists steadily took top order wickets in the first two sessions before taking the final five after tea.

Moeen Ali took 4-71 and Jack Leach 3-60, while Adil Rashid and Ben Stokes picked up a wicket each.

The win puts England 1-0 up in the three-match series and is their first in Tests overseas since October 2016.

It is also Joe Root's first win as captain away from home and is England's first win at Galle.

A dominant performance from England had left Sri Lanka needing to bat out the final two days to draw - or score a record 462 to win.

Beginning the day 15-0, the hosts survived the first hour unscathed but lost three quick wickets before lunch.

Angelo Mathews offered resistance with 53 but he chipped Moeen to mid-wicket shortly after tea as England closed in.

Rangana Herath - playing in his final Test - was the final wicket to fall, run out by Stokes.
